Hungarian goulash
Hungarian goulash is a rich and flavorful stew that has been a favourite comfort food for generations. This hearty dish, made with tender beef, aromatic spices, and a savoury tomato sauce, is perfect for a cozy family dinner. Serve it with mashed potatoes or cooked pasta to soak up the delicious sauce. Granny J's kitchen is all about turning simple ingredients into heart warming meals, and this goulash is a perfect example.
Ingredients:
- 500g of onion
- 500g of beef, cut into cubes
- 2-3 teaspoons of allspice
- 3 dried bay leaves
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley or fresh parsley
- Hot water for topping up
- 3-4-5 tablespoons of tomato sauce
- Pinch of basil, salt, pepper to taste
- Mashed potatoes or cooked pasta as a side dish
- 1 dcl of red wine (optional)
Instructions:
1. Chop the onion and fry it in a little oil in a deep pan. Salt the onion liberally to help release some of its water and soften.
2. When the onion is fried, add a little water and continue stewing with occasional mixing and adding water. This process with the onion should last for about half an hour.
3. Add allspice, bay leaf, cumin, and parsley, and stir.
4. Add the sliced meat, sauté everything together for a few minutes while stirring, and pour hot water (you can now add some red wine if you have it) to cover everything.
5. Cook on medium heat for the next hour and a half, stirring occasionally and adding boiling water as needed.
6. After about an hour and a half, salt the goulash to taste, and add a few tablespoons of tomato sauce. Stir, add pepper to taste and a pinch of basil.
7. Continue to stir and cook for another 15 minutes, then turn off the stove and leave the goulash covered to rest until the cooking process stops completely (this will probably take another 15 minutes).
Enjoy making and savoring this hearty Hungarian goulash. It's a wonderful dish to warm you up on a cold day and brings a taste of tradition to your kitchen. Happy cooking!
